Washington Capitals

Ryan Leonard has been placed on injured reserve and will miss an “extended period of time” because of an upper-body injury, Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said before their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday (7 p.m. ET; FDSNOH, MNMT). The rookie forward was injured during a 4-3 shootout loss at the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, leaving in the first period after a hit from Ducks defenseman Jacob Trouba. Leonard has 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 29 games. “Having it happen at this point in his career, early on when he was having some success, is no doubt unfortunate and probably frustrating, but also part of it,” Carbery said. “He’ll come out of it and I have no doubt he’ll be back and ready to go when he is and get right back after it.” … Goalie Charlie Lindgren (upper body) was also placed on injured reserve Sunday; he made 23 saves in a 7-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday. Lindgren is 5-3-1 with a 2.90 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in 10 games (nine starts). Washington recalled forward Bogdan Trineyev and goalie Clay Stevenson from Hershey of the American Hockey League. … Defenseman John Carlson (upper body) will be a game-time decision; he has missed the past two games.

Dallas Stars

Matt Duchene (upper body) and Nils Lundkvist (lower body) were each activated from long-term injured reserve by the Stars on Sunday and will return against the Pittsburgh Penguins (6 p.m. ET; Victory+, SN-PIT). Duchene, a forward, has not played since Oct. 18 (24 games); Lundkvist, a defenseman, had three points (one goal, two assists) in four games before being injured Oct. 16. Dallas will be without Ilya Lyubushkin. The defenseman is day to day with an undisclosed injury.

St. Louis Blues

Jordan Kyrou will not play against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday (7 p.m. ET; RDS, TSN2, FDSNMW) after the Blues forward sustained a lower-body injury in the first period of a 2-1 win at the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Kyrou, who was hit by Stephen Halliday, will have an MRI and be reevaluated in St. Louis. He is second on the Blues with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 28 games.

Montreal Canadiens

Goalie Sam Montembeault will be unavailable for the Canadiens against the Blues because of an illness. Jakub Dobes will start after making 22 saves in a 2-1 victory at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Kaapo Kahkonen was recalled from Laval of the American Hockey League. The 29-year-old is 6-2-0 with a 2.81 GAA and .895 save percentage in nine AHL games since signing a one-year, $1.15 million contract with Montreal on July 1.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Evgeni Malkin is day to day with an upper-body injury and will not play against the Stars on Sunday (6 p.m. ET; Victory+, SN-PIT), Malkin, a center, had two goals and an assist in a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay on Thursday. He is tied with Sidney Crosby for the Penguins lead in scoring with 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 26 games. ... Pittsburgh activated forwards Noel Acciari (upper body) and Justin Brazeau (upper body) from injured reserve and assigned forward Bokondji Imama to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. ... Defensemen Harrison Brunicke and Jack St. Ivany were recalled from their AHL conditioning loans but will not play Sunday.

New York Islanders

Jean-Gabriel Pageau missed his eighth straight game for the Islanders with an upper-body injury against the Florida Panthers on Sunday. The center was a full participant in the morning skate. ... Forward Jonathan Drouin (back) did not make the trip; he was a late scratch prior to a 6-3 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Forward Nikita Kucherov and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy missed a 2-0 loss to the Islanders on Saturday and are day to day with undisclosed injuries. Kucherov, who leads the Lightning with 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) in 25 games, was on the ice for an optional morning skate Saturday but didn't wear pads or participate in drills. Vasilevskiy didn't play in a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday and was expected to return Saturday. He is 11-6-1 with a 2.31 GAA and .917 save percentage in 19 starts. … Forward Brayden Point (undisclosed) missed his seventh straight game.

Philadelphia Flyers

Cam York (upper body) did not play for the Flyers in a 3-2 loss to the Avalanche on Sunday. The defenseman, who also missed practice on Saturday, is day to day because of an injury sustained during the second period of a 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. "He's a mobile guy, he plays all parts of the game, specialty teams," Tocchet said of York, who is second on the Flyers with an average ice time of 23:31 per game. "He's with 'Sanny' (Travis Sanheim), they usually check the other (top) lines. ... It's next man up. That's why we play this game." Nick Seeler has been paired with Sanheim in York's absence.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Joseph Woll (lower body) was placed on injured reserve by the Maple Leafs on Saturday, retroactive to Dec. 4, and is expected to be sidelined for one week. The goalie was injured Thursday and did not play in the third period of a 5-1 win at the Carolina Hurricanes. Woll didn’t make his season debut until Nov. 15 after he left the team in training camp due to a personal matter. He is 4-3-1 with a 2.44 GAA and .928 save percentage in eight games this season. "We're not expecting it to be too long," coach Craig Berube said. Goalie Artur Akhtyamov was recalled from Toronto of the American Hockey League and backed up Dennis Hildeby for a 2-1 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

Ottawa Senators

Shane Pinto (lower body) will be out at least two weeks, Senators coach Travis Green said before their 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. The forward was injured from a hit by Mika Zibanejad during a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday. "He's a big part of our team, much like when Brady (Tkachuk) got hurt, [Thomas Chabot]," Green said. "Those are big parts of your team. We're going to miss him when he's out, and when he gets back, that'll be great." Pinto has 18 points (12 goals, six assists) in 27 games this season.
