Connor Murphy was traded to the Edmonton Oilers by the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday for a second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.
The 32-year-old defenseman has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 60 games this season. He also led the Blackhawks in blocks (87) and was second in short-handed ice time per game (2:57).
"It was a whirlwind of emotions, a lot of excitement," Murphy said when asked about the trade on Tuesday. "Edmonton has been a top team that I’ve had my sights set on, and I knew something might happen, and to be here is definitely surreal and definitely a lot of excitement to get started."
Murphy is in the final season of a four-year, $17.6 million contract ($4.4 million average annual value) he signed with the Blackhawks on Aug. 31, 2021, and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. Chicago will retain 50 percent of his remaining contract.
Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round (No. 20) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Murphy has 173 points (47 goals, 126 assists) in 805 regular-season games for the Coyotes and Blackhawks, and four assists in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games.
"For me, winning is a top priority, and I haven’t had a lot of opportunity with maybe being on losing teams in the past," Murphy said. "I came in in Arizona, and then moving on to Chicago and getting more ice time that way. I feel comfortable with my role now and I just want to play meaningful games and winning hockey. With that comes pressure, and I think that is a privilege to have on your shoulders, and to be able to come together with the group and feel that, feel the emotions of the highs and lows, that’s kind of what it’s all about and something that I’ve really had my sights set on, and that’s honestly why Edmonton has been a top priority and I was hoping to come here."
