Red Wings at Hurricanes | Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Taylor Hall and Shayne Gostisbehere each had a goal and two assists, and the Carolina Hurricanes extended their point streak to 12 games with a 5-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Lenovo Center on Saturday.

Jackson Blake had a goal and an assist, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for the Hurricanes (38-15-6), who have won five in a row and are 10-0-2 during their point streak.

“There was a stretch there where we took our foot of the gas and it didn’t look so good, but I thought overall the ‘D’ played really well,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said.

Simon Edvinsson and Patrick Kane scored for the Red Wings (34-20-6), who are 2-4-1 in their past seven games. Cam Talbot made 31 saves.

“I thought the game was real fast to begin with. There was a lot of pace going both ways,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “A lot of [Carolina’s] offensive opportunities came off of our tape. We have it on our sticks, we make mistakes with it and they’re gone the other way. They’re a real good team that capitalizes on that.”

Hall put the Hurricanes up 1-0 at 14:05 of the first period when he scored on a breakaway. Hall blocked a shot by Edvinsson along the left-side boards before chasing down the loose puck and tucking it around Talbot’s right pad.

“I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do,” Hall said. “I tried to sell the forehand [and] it didn’t really work, so I went to option two. I like to put it to my forehand. It was a big goal for our team at the end of the period there.”

A Carolina power-play goal extended the lead to 2-0 at 19:52. Sebastian Aho’s wrist shot was deflected into the net by Edvinsson, who was trying to box out Seth Jarvis near the right post.

Eric Robinson made it 3-0 at 2:52 of the second period. Sean Walker intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and passed to William Carrier, who found Robinson alone in front for his 11th goal of the season.

“They’re a heck of a team. This is a hard building to play in,” Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. “They’re the class of the [Eastern Conference], and you’ve got to come in here at some point and get points. I just didn’t think we executed, and we allowed them to be on top of us and come back in waves.”

Detroit scored 47 seconds apart to pull within a goal. Edvinsson made it 3-1 at 18:26 during 4-on-4 play when he took a cross-ice pass in the left circle from Alex DeBrincat and beat Andersen inside the right post. Kane followed with a short-side goal from the left circle that deflected off Blake's skate to cut Carolina’s lead to 3-2 at 19:13.

“The game was still in a good spot for us. We were playing really well,” Brind’Amour said. “But we were doing, for the most part, what we had to do. We came out in the third, and guys answered that.”

Gostisbehere passed to Logan Stankoven at the bottom of the left circle and scored on a return pass to take a 4-2 lead at 2:18 of the third period.

“Our offense is heavily driven on low-to-high stuff and getting pucks to the net, so I think it obviously works for the offensive defenseman,” Gostisbehere said. “For myself, [it’s] trying to do what I do best, just help out offensively while being responsible defensively.”

Blake extended the lead to 5-2 at 5:30 when he kept the puck on a 2-on-1 with Stankoven and beat Talbot blocker side.

“I saw the defender on ‘Stanks,’ and I did glance and saw (defenseman Alexander Nikishin) coming in the play,” Blake said. “But I pretty much had like a mini breakaway almost, and I’m like, I’m shooting this thing.”
