Stone's 2nd goal lifts Golden Knights past Flyers in OT

PHILADELPHIA -- Mark Stone scored his second goal of the game 2:47 into overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday.

Stone buried a backdoor pass from Jack Eichel after Flyers forward Travis Konecny lost the puck in the Philadelphia zone.

"I was backchecking my guy and then I heard the crowd kind of ooh and ahh, so wasn't sure really what happened," Stone said. "Jack obviously forced the turnover, had great poise with it, kind of made their guys flat-footed. I just came down the gut there, and he made an incredible pass backdoor. Great play by our best player."

Zach Whitecloud had a goal, and Eichel had two assists for Vegas (15-6-9), which extended its point streak to six games (5-0-1) and is 3-0-1 on a five-game road trip. Akira Schmid made 17 saves.

Trevor Zegras and Noah Juulsen each scored, and Christian Dvorak had two assists for Philadelphia (16-9-4), which has alternated wins and losses over the past six games (3-2-1). Dan Vladar made 18 saves.

The Flyers also went 0-for-3 with one shot on goal on the power play.

"It's a little disappointing how it ended," Flyers coach Rick Tocchet said. "Sour taste. The play at the end, and the power play, but other than that ... we had some guys have some tough nights but we hung in there."

Stone has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) during an eight-game point streak since returning Nov. 26 from a 16-game absence because of an upper-body injury. He has a point in all 14 games he's played this season.

"Obviously he's our emotional leader, and he's also a world-class player," Eichel said. "Does all the little things, plays in all the situations, and we're lucky to have him. It's been awesome to see. He's been on a great run and playing some incredible hockey, and it's well-deserved."

Whitecloud made it 1-0 with his first of the season at 6:07 of the first period when he took a pass from Ivan Barbashev as he drove to the net and slid a backhand under Vladar.

Zegras tied the game 1-1 at 16:11 when he tapped in a backdoor pass from the left point by Travis Sanheim.

"[Zegras] makes a great play to me at the top," Sanheim said. "I tried to get going downhill and attack a little bit. Didn't feel like I had a lane to shoot it so bought a little bit of time, and he ends up sneaking in back post and great job finishing."

Stone put Vegas ahead 2-1 with a power-play goal off his own rebound at 12:53 of the second period.

He credited the Golden Knights medical and training staff for allowing him to jump right back into the lineup without missing a beat offensively.

"I've gotten unfortunately quite used to it," he said. "I've been in and out of the lineup a lot over the last three seasons. Our sports science, our medicine, skating coach, everybody puts together an incredible plan to make you feel your best when you're coming back. So that helps a lot. Then obviously you get put in with great players, that helps too."

Juulsen scored his first goal in 75 games to make it 2-2 at 16:08. The defenseman one-timed a pass from Dvorak from the left face-off circle for his first goal since Feb. 17, 2024.

The Flyers had the only power play of the third period but couldn't get a shot on goal. They are 4-for-32 (12.3 percent) on the man-advantage in their past 13 games.

"We had a good game so I don't want to get negative, but the power play, we're not getting middle shots," Tocchet said. "We've got to get a middle shot. Other than Trevor, our flanks, they're having a tough time making a play. We're not using the middle of the ice. Coaches are a little frustrated. It's a broken record, because we practice it, and for some reason when the pressure hits we kind of lose our bearings. It's not just one guy, it's everybody. But we've got to keep grinding away."

NOTES: The Golden Knights are 9-1-4 with Stone in lineup this season, 6-5-5 without him. ... Stone is the sixth player in the past 20 years with at least a point in his first 14 games of the season, joining Dany Heatley (22 games, 2005-06), William Nylander (17 games, 2023-24), Connor McDavid (17 games, 2021-22), Henrik Zetterberg (17 games, 2007-08) and Artemi Panarin (15 games, 2023-24.) ...
