NYR@ANA: McTavish directs a pass past the goaltender to win it in OT

J.T. Miller, Alexis Lafreniere and Adam Fox each had a goal and an assist, Artemi Panarin had two assists, and Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves for the Rangers (34-32-7), who have lost five of six (1-4-1).

"We made mistakes and the mistakes ended up in the back of our net," Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said.

The Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets each have 75 points, six behind the Ottawa Senators for the first wild card in the Eastern Conference. Columbus has played 71 games, Montreal 72 games and the Rangers 73 games.

McTavish redirected a pass from Jackson LaCombe into the net from in close for his 20th goal of the season, capping the comeback from a two-goal deficit.

Gauthier scored Carlsson's rebound off the rush to cut it to 4-3 at 14:12 of the third period, and Zellweger then scored with a wrist shot from just above the right hash marks just after the Ducks killed a penalty to tie it 4-4 at 18:15.

"We were in charge of the game going into the third period, twice," Laviolette said. "We don't execute and get it done, so that's disappointing. As disappointing as it gets."

NYR@ANA: Zellweger ties the game up on a sweet passing play

Panarin took a shot from above the right circle that went wide, kicked off the end boards and came out the other side, where Fox backhanded the puck into the net for a 1-0 lead at 3:20 of the first period.

The Ducks, who had one short-handed goal through the first 70 games, scored short-handed for the second consecutive game to tie it 1-1 at 16:55.

Carlsson broke up a pass in the New York zone and then fed the puck ahead to Alex Killorn for a partial breakaway and he scored his own rebound.

The Rangers went 1-for-7 on the power play and did not capitalize on a 5-on-3 for 1:36 in the third period.

"Our (power play) unit basically gave them the game tonight," J.T. Miller said. "They scored, basically, twice against us."

Carlsson, who only recently started killing penalties, scored short-handed off a feed from Killorn in a 6-2 win against the visiting Boston Bruins on Wednesday.

"Fun to get on the board two games in a row," Carlsson said. "Feels good out there. It's not too hard, it's not too easy either, so it's fun."
