Panthers at Devils | Recap

NEWARK, N.J. -- Spencer Knight made 26 saves, helping the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 shootout win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

Jesper Boqvist scored for the Panthers (26-16-3), who had lost two straight and three of four. They lost 4-3 at the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

"It's huge," Boqvist said. "We didn't like our game [Monday]. We came out good today against a good team, so a nice two points for sure."

Anton Lundell scored the deciding goal in the shootout for Florida, which is 4-0 in shootouts this season.

"I think we were able to play pretty good the whole game," Lundell said. "We knew it was going to be a hard game. They've had a really good season, and we've had some hard games against them. So going into the game, we knew we were going to have to play a really good game if we wanted to win today."

Nico Hischier scored, and Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves for the Devils (26-16-5), who have lost six of eight (2-4-2).

"I thought it was a solid game for us in lots of ways," New Jersey coach Sheldon Keefe said. "You'd like to make one or two more plays here or there or finish one or two more of our chances, but there's lots to like in a game that gives us every chance to win against a good team."

Boqvist gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead 41 seconds into the third period, taking a cross-ice feed from Carter Verhaeghe and scoring from just inside the right face-off circle.

"I kind of tried to open up first I think, so I guess I was expecting a pass, but if [Verhaeghe] put it at the net, I was going there, too," Boqvist said.

Hischier tied it 1-1 at 2:27, taking the puck from behind the net and scoring with a sharp-angled shot that deflected off Panthers defenseman Gustav Forsling. It was Hischier's 20th goal of the season.

"It's a 0-0 game going into the third, we got scored on pretty quick in the third and to get it right back is pretty important," said Hischier, the Devils captain. "… I think at the end, I think we had chances to win that game. It could have gone either way."

The Panthers were 2-for-2 on the penalty kill after having allowed seven power-play goals on 25 opportunities in their previous five games; they had been short-handed at least four times in each of those games.

"Yeah, we talked a little bit about it," Lundell said. "We can't win games from the box, and everybody knows it, but we just tried to play hard and stay out of the box today."

The Devils had their six-game home winning streak end.

"Like all teams in this league, it's tough to get points and you've got to take them when you can,” Markstrom said. “We played some good hockey and good defensive hockey. We've got a big game coming up here in a few days (at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday)."

Florida defeated New Jersey for the first time in three games this season. The Devils won 4-1 on Nov. 12 and 6-2 on Nov. 14, each on the road.

"They earned our respect in the two games they beat us in Florida, and we showed that respect tonight," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. "We played hard."

NOTES: Hischier became the first player to have four straight 20-goal seasons for the Devils since Kyle Palmieri (five from 2015-16 to 2019-20). He also joined Kevin Fiala (five from 2019-20 to 2023-24) as the only Switzerland-born players to achieve the feat. … New Jersey forward Stefan Noesen did not play because of an illness. He was replaced in the lineup by Kurtis MacDermid, who had four hits in 6:36 of ice time. … Devils center Jack Hughes had his four-game point streak end. … Panthers forward Sam Reinhart had his three-game goal streak end and his six-game goal streak against the Devils end.
