Red Wings at Lightning | Recap

TAMPA -- Marco Kasper scored his second goal of the game at 3:22 of overtime, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Friday.

After Simon Edvinsson caused a Tampa Bay turnover in the neutral zone, Kasper carried the puck into the left face-off circle and won it with a wrist shot to the far post.

"I think they were kind of tired," Kasper said. “Edvinsson made a good play, so I just skated by and scored."

Kasper had tied it 3-3 at 12:59 of the third period when he scored from the right circle off a pass by Alex DeBrincat.

"We've had a couple of tough losses, which hurt a lot," Kasper said. "We talked about being a team and going out there playing our best on every shift. Every minute we've got to try to give it our all and we did a good job of that today."

DET@TBL: Kasper blasts it in for overtime winner

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings (37-35-7), who avoided elimination from Stanley Cup Playoff contention with the win and moved six points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference with three games remaining for each team. Alex Lyon made 18 saves.

Detroit had lost two in a row, including 4-1 at the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

"They showed each other a lot, not necessarily what they showed me -- it's way more important they play for their teammates," Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. "We had a good discussion this morning about what we expected from each other and I thought they played to it. Didn't look [it] right off the bat, getting scored on early, but we stayed with it and found a way to scrape out a win in a building that's really tough to play in."

Gage Goncalves scored twice, Anthony Cirelli had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Hagel had two assists for the Lightning (45-26-8), who have lost four of five, with three of those losses coming in overtime or the shootout. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves.

By earning a point, Tampa Bay clinched a top-three finish in the Atlantic Division, also moving within two points of the Toronto Maple Leafs for first place and two points ahead of third-place Florida. Toronto has played one fewer game.

"Ultimately you want to get the result, you want two points, but what we're doing now with our process has not been right for the last little bit," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "It's unfortunate because we've put ourselves in a pretty good situation, a lot of hard work has gone into 70-plus games and now it looks like we're playing preseason games."

Cirelli gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead at 1:01 of the first period when he scored on a breakaway set up by a backhand pass up the middle from Hagel.

"This time of year, we've got to go that full 60, that right mentality in order," Hagel said. "We've got a really good hockey team here. We have a lot of belief that we have the team to do it. Every guy here believes that we can do some damage. Right now I'd say it's a little bit frustrating the way we're losing."

Kane tied it 1-1 at 4:07 of the second period, scoring on a one-timer from the left hash marks after Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman knocked the puck off Kasper's stick.

DET@TBL: Kane rips it in to tie the score

Tyler Motte put Detroit up 2-1 at 16:37 after Justin Holl’s shot caromed off the boards to the back of Vasilevskiy’s pad, allowing Motte to poke the puck in.

"There are a few games left and we've just got to show exactly who we were," Lyon said. "That's important and I know everybody in this room takes a lot of pride in that, so we're going to just continue to grind the same way we always do."

Goncalves tied it 2-2 at 17:52 with his first goal. Hagel chipped the puck toward the net, and Goncalves got a piece of it before Lyon struggled to control it on his stick and it went in off the goalie’s left pad.

"It's nice to contribute,” Goncalves said. “The loss [stinks], obviously, so hopefully we can be better next game."

Goncalves then put the Lightning ahead 3-2 at 1:38 of the third. Cirelli took control of the puck in the neutral zone and sent it to Hagel, who found Goncalves open for a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle.

"We're just not doing it right now," Cooper said. "You're up 3-2 in your own rink with a chance to fight for home ice and you don't come away with two points. Shame on us."

NOTES: Kane has five points (two goals, three assists) in his past five games. He had his 354th multipoint game to move within four of tying Mike Modano for the most by a United States-born player in NHL history. ... Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov played his 800th NHL game and was held without a point for the second time in his past 14 games. … Hagel has five points (goal, four assists) during a three-game point streak and 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) over his past 12 games.
