Ducks at Hurricanes | Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jalen Chatfield, Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall each had a goal and an assist, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 at Lenovo Center on Thursday.

Mark Jankowski and Jackson Blake also scored, and Frederik Andersen made 11 saves for the Hurricanes (27-14-3), who have won three in a row.

“Pretty much exactly how we needed to do it, and obviously we got the result,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It’s tough to find fault in that game with anybody.”

It was Andersen’s first win since Nov. 6 when he made 21 saves in a 4-3 win against the Minnesota Wild. He had gone 0-7-2 in his previous nine starts.

“You’re never perfect. Sometimes things don’t go your way,” Andersen said. “You’ve got to keep with it, keep turning the rocks over, finding ways to get better. Clean up the game as much as you can and obviously just believe in yourself.”

Ryan Poehling and Mikael Granlund scored for the Ducks (21-20-3), who are 0-7-1 in their past eight. Ville Husso made 30 saves.

"Decent first [period] and we’re in a pretty good position late in the second,” Anaheim coach Joel Quenneville said. “[Then] we fed into what we don’t want to do, [which] is turn the puck over. They can play with the lead and check as good as there is in the League when they do get that lead. We didn’t generate much as the third went on.”

The Ducks scored off the rush for a 1-0 lead at 13:18 of the first period. After taking a pass from Chris Kreider in the right face-off circle, Poehling made a diagonal pass to Jackson LaCombe at the left post before scoring into an open net on the return pass.

Jankowski tied it 1-1 at 8:56 of the second period. Jankowski drove to the net along the goal line before the puck deflected off Ducks defenseman Drew Helleson and into the net.

“I think I got the shot off, and they either saved it or it went off the post,” Jankowski said. “Just trying to create something. The lane was there so you get in there and good things will happen.”

Granlund gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead at 12:04. Moments after Granlund batted a rebound through the crease with an open net, Mason McTavish gathered the puck and passed back to Granlund at the left post for a redirect into an open net.

Stankoven tied it 2-2 at 14:05, scoring for the third straight game. After Anaheim turned the puck over at the offensive blue line, Chatfield poked the puck ahead to Hall, who skated over the blue line and passed to Stankoven, for a redirection at the top of the crease.

“I just had a good gap, and I kind of saw ‘Hallsy’ going with speed,” Chatfield said. “I’m just trying to get it past the (defenseman), and they made a great play to finish.”

The 22-year-old forward has scored a goal in three straight games after scoring just one in the previous 26.

“Crazy how one goal all of a sudden, now you go play. All of a sudden, they just keep coming,” Brind’Amour said. “One thing about ‘Stanks,’ his game never really changed. He’s competitive, he keeps doing the little things. Now [he’s] just getting rewarded for it.”

Carolina took a 3-2 lead at 16:08 when Chatfield one-timed a set-up pass from Jordan Staal in the left circle for his first goal of the season.

“When they tied it up and got the lead, we just sagged,” Quenneville said. “Sure plays is what we’re talking about, and they weren’t so sure.”

Carolina pushed the lead to 4-2 at 10:39. Poehling blocked a one-timer by Alexander Nikishin in the left circle, but the rebound came to Blake in the slot for a backhand finish.

Hall scored an empty-net goal at 17:11 for the 5-2 final.
