NEW YORK -- The Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers both will wrap up their respective weekend back-to-back sets when the Original Six clubs square off at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.

Puck drop between Detroit (10-7-1; 21 points) and New York (10-7-2; 22 points) is set for 7 p.m., with broadcast coverage on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit and the Red Wings Radio Network (97.1 The Ticket in Detroit). Sunday’s clash between the two squads marks their second meeting in the span of 12 days – the first coming on Nov. 4, when the Red Wings fell to the Rangers, 4-1, at Little Caesars Arena.

“You have your memory of the game, but we also have some evidence of how things have gone,” Detroit head coach Todd McLellan said about the approach when preparing to play the same opponent twice in a short period of time. “You can confirm how the team really wants to play – the team you’re playing against. Then, it just comes down to the players executing more.”

Detroit’s four-game homestand ended on a frustrating note on Saturday, as it couldn’t hold a three-goal lead and ultimately dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Buffalo Sabres at Little Caesars Arena.

According to Lucas Raymond, the Red Wings fell victim to self-inflicted mistakes against the Sabres.

“We had a three-goal lead with very little time left in the second period, but we just weren’t good enough in the third,” said Raymond, who led Detroit with three points (all assists) on Saturday. “We need to keep playing our game and stay under control.”

In the end, miscues here and there in addition to a lack of execution during various moments added up to the Red Wings’ first overtime loss of the season. And while that made Saturday’s result difficult to digest, Patrick Kane is hoping the hard lessons learned against Buffalo will aid the group in the future when similar in-game situations might arise.

“You have a chance, up 4-3 on the power play to put the game out of reach and we gave up a short-handed goal,” Patrick Kane said. “Those things are unacceptable that we just have to learn. It hurts in the moment, but hopefully we can learn from it.”

Owning a 7-2-0 record in their last nine games, the Rangers pushed their winning streak to three straight with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday.

Mika Zibanejad scored New York’s lone regulation goal on Saturday, giving him points in four of his last five games. Zibanejad also ranks fourth on the Rangers in scoring with 11 points, following Alexis Lafrenière (4-8—12), Adam Fox (3-13—16) and Artemi Panarin (5-12—17). Jonathan Quick is projected to be between the pipes for New York on Sunday, which would be his second start against Detroit this season.
