DETROIT -The Detroit Red Wings today assigned right wing Martin Frk to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins after claiming him off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes.
Frk was claimed off waivers by Carolina from Detroit on Oct. 9 and played in two NHL games for the Hurricanes, including his NHL debut on Oct. 18 at Edmonton. The 23-year-old forward spent the previous three seasons with Detroit's minor league affiliates, logging 68 points (36-32-68) and 127 penalty minutes in 149 AHL games with the Griffins and 51 points (28-23-51) and 26 penalty minutes in 44 ECHL games with the Toledo Walleye. Frk enjoyed his most productive AHL season in 2015-16, notching 44 points (27-17-44) in 67 regular-season games and chipping in four points (1-3-4) in four postseason games.

Originally drafted in the second round (49th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings, Frk spent three seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League prior to turning pro, racking up 163 points (73-90-163) in 152 games. Frk captured a QMJHL and Memorial Cup championship in 2013 and registered 46 points (18-28-46) in 38 career playoff appearances and earned a spot on the Canadian Hockey League Memorial Cup All-Star team after tallying nine points (5-4-9) in four games. The Pelhrimov, Czech Republic, native also represented his country at the 2011 and 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships, logging 10 points (6-4-10) in 12 tournament games.
