Golden Knights at Hurricanes | Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Seth Jarvis scored two goals for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 3-2 win against the Vegas Golden Knights at Lenovo Center on Friday.

Jackson Blake also scored, Jordan Martinook had two assists, and Pyotr Kochetkov made 29 saves for the Hurricanes (27-16-3), who had lost two straight (0-1-1).

“[Kochetkov] kept us in it,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “[The Golden Knights'] first period was good. We were trying, but they were putting it on us. That’s what a goalie can do, keep us in it.”

Tomas Hertl and Shea Theodore scored for the Golden Knights (29-13-3), who have lost four of their past five games. Adin Hill made 25 saves.

“We’re not scoring at the level we were, so we have to look at ourselves and say, ‘Why not?’” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “It’s some guys we rely on. Teams have shut some of that down. We do have to start getting some of those goals to go our way by playing that type of game a little more, where we’re going to the net and looking for second chances.”

The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead at 4:22 of the second period. Alex Pietrangelo’s backdoor pass deflected off the stick of Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho to Hertl, who cut toward the slot from the left circle and scored with a backhand.

“Next time we have the lead, we have to keep pushing and get the next one,” Hertl said. “We tried making passes in the neutral zone, we didn’t put enough pucks behind them like we did in the first. We lost a lot of pucks in the neutral zone and fed them.”

Keegan Kolesar had a chance to extend the lead on a penalty shot at 9:28, but Kochetkov made a blocker save.

Jarvis then tied it 1-1 at 11:57. After Noah Hanifin blocked Martinook’s initial centering attempt, the forward successfully sent a backhand pass to Jarvis, who scored from the edge of the crease.

Blake gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead 46 seconds into the third period when his centering pass on a rush deflected five-hole on Hill off the stick of Hanifin.

“That’s one where you don’t ask how,” Blake said. “I don’t mind those once in a while. Those ones feel just as good."

Jarvis pushed the lead to 3-1 with his second goal of the game at 6:09. He took a return pass from Jordan Staal on a 2-on-1 and scored with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Martinook started the play by flipping the puck high into the neutral zone right after he broke up two scoring chances for Vegas in the slot.

“That second (assist) was definitely, in my opinion, a better play,” Jarvis said. “Stopping a goal then creating the transition the other way for me and 'Jordo,' he was evident all over the ice.”

Theodore cut the lead to 3-2 at 9:52, scoring through traffic from the point for a power-play goal.

“Guys were moving. We were playing simple, we were getting on the forecheck," Theodore said. "We were getting a lot of pucks back and getting a lot of opportunities to score. We didn’t cash in as many as we would have liked.

"Going forward, I think we have to try and get back on track faster and try and get the momentum back."
