TOR@CAR: Matthews chips the puck in for a PPG while falling to the ice

Scoring regular goals must have gotten too boring for Auston Matthews .

So on Thursday night, Matthews decided he would score a falling, backhanded, practically no-look goal.

The Maple Leafs trailed the Hurricanes 3-2 at Lenovo Center when Mitch Marner took a shot from the point. After Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov turned it aside, Matthews, who was parked on the left side of the crease, alertly corralled the rebound.

Moving across to the right side, Matthews, with a little help from Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin , hit the ice as he attempted to get the puck to his backhand. Despite the spill, he successfully popped the puck into the net just beyond Kochetkov's reach.

You can count former Maple Leafs forward Joe Thornton among the impressed. Jumbo was with the team as Matthews' guest during the team's Mentors Trip on Thursday.
