Super 16: Lightning make big move

The Tampa Bay Lightning, winners of eight consecutive games, moved up six spots in the weekly NHL.com Super 16 power rankings to No. 6 this week.

The Lightning did not receive enough voting points to be in the Super 16 as recently as two weeks ago.
The Washington Capitals are No. 1 for a fifth straight week and were three points short of being a unanimous selection.
The Pittsburgh Penguins moved up two spots to No. 4, and the Arizona Coyotes jumped three spots to No. 10.
The Carolina Hurricanes (No. 12) and Philadelphia Flyers (No. 15) each fell five spots.
The Edmonton Oilers (No. 13) and Calgary Flames (No. 14) got back in the Super 16, knocking out the Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers.

To create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16:

1. Washington Capitals (30-10-5)

Total points: 205
Last week: No. 1
Hit: Forward Jakub Vrana, who was the Capitals' miss last week because of his streak of 10 straight games without a goal, has five points (four goals, one assist) in his past four games.
Miss: The Capitals allowed four power-play goals (9-for-13 on the penalty kill) in their past four games.

2. St. Louis Blues (27-10-7)

Total points:193
Last week:No. 2
Hit: The Blues are the only team without a regulation loss when they score first (19-0-5).
Miss: They are 6-for-12 on the penalty kill (50.0 percent) in their past four games and 31-for-43 (72.1 percent) in 14 games since Dec. 7, 25th in the NHL in that span.

3. Boston Bruins (25-8-11)

Total points:183
Last week:No. 3
Hit: The Bruins have scored at least one power-play goal in 11 straight games (13-for-42; 30.9 percent). It's their longest streak with a power-play goal since a 12-game run from Dec. 31, 1987 to Jan. 23, 1988.
Miss: The Bruins have won two of 13 games decided after regulation. They are 0-6 in games decided in a shootout.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (26-12-5)

Total points: 152
Last week: No. 6
Hit:GoalieTristan Jarry, who was named to the Metropolitan Division All-Star team on Tuesday, is 13-3-1 with a .935 save percentage, 2.00 goals-against average and three shutouts in 17 starts since Nov. 16.
Miss:The Penguins are 1-for-12 on the power play in their past five games.

5. New York Islanders (27-12-3)

Total points:150
Last week: No. 4
Hit: The Islanders are 13-for-14 on the penalty kill in their past seven games.
Miss: They have 12 power plays in their past eight games, and they're 0-for-12. They did not get a power play in a 4-3 overtime win against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

6. Tampa Bay Lightning (25-13-4)

Total points:149
Last week: No. 12
Hit: The Lightning have had 13 goal-scorers, nine players with five or more points, seven players score a game-winning goal, and Andrei Vasilevskiy post a .932 save percentage in six starts during their winning streak.
Miss:Nothing.

7. Colorado Avalanche (25-15-4)

Total points: 124
Last week:No. 5
Hit: Nathan MacKinnon has nine points (four goals, five assists) in his past five games. The center is third in the NHL with 65 points (26 goals, 39 assists).
Miss: The Avalanche, 3-6-1 in their past 10 games, are 0-for-8 on the power play in their past three.

8. Vegas Golden Knights (24-16-6)

Total points:115
Last week: No. 8
Hit: Max Pacioretty leads the Golden Knights with nine goals, 18 points, a plus-11 rating and 62 shots on goal in 14 games since Dec. 10. The forward's 62 shots on goal are the most in the NHL in that span.
Miss: Rookie forward Cody Glass is week to week with a lower-body injury sustained in a 5-4 overtime win against the Blues on Saturday. Glass has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 37 games.

9. Toronto Maple Leafs (24-15-6)

Total points:106
Last week:No. 9
Hit: The Maple Leafs have a plus-15 goal differential (19-4) in the third period in their past 10 games, a major improvement considering they were minus-14 (38-52) in their first 35 games.
Miss: The Maple Leafs have seven goals from defensemen in 22 games since coach Sheldon Keefe took over for Mike Babcock on Nov. 20. Toronto has 16 goals from defensemen this season, which was tied for 26th in the NHL with the Dallas Stars.

10. Arizona Coyotes (25-16-4)

Total points: 91
Last week: No. 13
Hit:The Coyotes have won four in a row and are 5-for-14 on the power play and 11-for-11 on the penalty kill during the streak. Forwards Derek Stepan (one goal, four assists), Phil Kessel (one goal, five assists) and Lawson Crouse (three goals, one assist) have points in each of the four games.
Miss: Goalies Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta are out, each with a lower-body injury.

11. Dallas Stars (25-14-4)

Total points: 83
Last week: No. 11
Hit: Forward Roope Hintz had five points (two goals, three assists) in a four-game point scoring streak that ended Wednesday.
Miss: John Klingberg has a lower-body injury that has kept the defenseman out of the lineup for the past two games. He's day to day.

12. Carolina Hurricanes (25-16-2)

Hit:The Hurricanes signed forward
Justin Williams
to a one-year, $700,000 contract Tuesday. Williams was Carolina's captain last season, when he had 53 points (23 goals, 30 assists) in 82 games and helped the Hurricanes reach the Eastern Conference Final.
Miss:They're 62.1 percent on the penalty kill and have allowed 4.13 goals per game in eight games since Dec. 21 (3-5-0).

13. Edmonton Oilers (23-17-5)

Hit:CenterConnor McDavid has 10 points (four goals, six assists) in his past seven games after the Oilers captain had two assists in a four-game stretch from Dec. 14-20. The Oilers are 3-0-1 in their past four games.
Miss: Mikko Koskinen has an .864 save percentage and a 4.19 goals-against average in his past four starts.

14. Calgary Flames (23-17-5)

Total points:30
Last week: NR
Hit:The Flames have won three games in a row, each by one goal. Forward Johnny Gaudreau has five points (one goal, four assists) in the past four games.
Miss: They are 11.8 percent on the power play and 62.1 percent on the penalty kill in their past five games. But they do have two shorthanded goals.

15. Philadelphia Flyers (23-15-6)

Total points: 20
Last week:No. 10
Hit:The Flyers are 14-2-4 with a plus-36 goal differential (75-39) as the home team this season.
Miss: They are 9-13-2 with a minus-31 goal differential (61-92) on the road. They were 1-4-1 and outscored 28-16 on their recent six-game road trip.

16. Winnipeg Jets (24-16-4)

Total points: 18

Hit: The Jets are 14-2-4 in one-goal games, a .700 winning percentage that was second behind the Islanders (.714).
Miss: Winnipeg was last in the NHL in first-period goals before scoring two Wednesday against Toronto.
