"He's been fantastic on the ice," Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. "His work ethic and his ability to play hard -- he just plays the game the right way, and he plays it the way we want to be able to play. It's just been a dream since Day 1."
A second-round pick by Dallas (No. 47) at the 2021 NHL Draft, Stankoven has 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) in 102 regular-season games with the Stars and Hurricanes, and 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 34 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
"(He's) someone we wanted to have as part of our family as long as we could," Tulsky said. "The opportunity to get that committment and know that we will have him here at least eight years beyond this one, it's really important to us. We see him as a core piece who will be part of what we build in years to come."
