Oilers at Kings | Recap

LOS ANGELES -- Quinton Byfield scored his second goal 3:19 into overtime in the Los Angeles Kings’ 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday.

Byfield beat Stuart Skinner with a wrist shot from the left circle to give the Kings (20-10-5) their sixth straight home win.

“Probably since the Rangers game where I put one by [Igor] Shesterkin (in a 5-1 win on Dec. 14), just feels like I’m beating goalies again,” Byfield said after scoring for the fifth time in six games.

Warren Foegele had a goal and two assists, and Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves for Los Angeles.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each extended his point streak to 10 games, and the Oilers (21-11-3) extended their point streak to four games (3-0-1). Skinner made 25 saves.

“I feel like we came out in the second and played really well, had the puck a lot in their zone. And we kind of took the foot off the gas pedal in the third and let them come back into it, so I think we need to, like we did the 13 games prior, stay on the gas and make them defend,” said Edmonton forward Viktor Arvidsson.

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead at 9:43 of the first period when Kasperi Kapanen charged in on goal to put in Connor Brown’s rebound.

Byfield tied it 1-1 at 12:42. Foegele protected the puck behind the glass, which then allowed Byfield to collect it and beat Skinner at the right post from the right circle.

“I think our line was being simple and doing what we do best, which is obviously forecheck,” Byfield said. “We got the pucks behind them. Simplest hockey as you can, just get it behind and forecheck and make their ‘D’ make mistakes.”

Foegele put Los Angeles up 2-1 at 17:35, throwing the loose puck on net from the slot and sending it in off the blade of Brett Kulak’s stick.

The forward played the previous three seasons with the Oilers before signing a three-year, $10.5 million contract (average annual value 3.5 million) with the Kings on July 1.

“The first thing I really wanted was the win, and super proud of the guys for digging in the whole game,” Foegele said. “Obviously, scoring against your former team -- doesn’t matter how it goes in -- feels pretty special.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied it 2-2 3:20 into the second period on the power play. McDavid found Nugent-Hopkins in the high slot for a wrist shot to get his seventh goal.

McDavid has 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) during his past 10 games. It is McDavid’s 16th point streak of at least 10 games, breaking a tie with Guy Lafleur (15) for second in NHL history. Wayne Gretzky had 31 such streaks.

Edmonton went back in front 3-2 at 11:59 when Arvidsson scored from the slot after Draisaitl forced a turnover in the offensive zone.

Arvidsson played the previous three seasons with the Kings before signing a two-year, $8 million contract ($4 million average annual value) with the Oilers on July 1.

“It was nice, for sure,” said Arvidsson. “A lot of friends that I got close with, so it’s good to play them again.”

Tanner Jeannot tied it up 3-3 at 2:32 of the third period. He was at the top of the crease to tap in Jordan Spence’s centering pass. The line of Byfield, Foegele and Jeannot combined for seven points and a plus-7 rating.

“We’ve been using our speed the last couple games and using our size, and we’re just wearing them down and getting pucks to the net,” Foegele said. “It’s a pretty simple recipe, but we’re sticking with it, and credit to the guys for playing the right way.”

NOTES: McDavid got his 100th assist during the calendar year. He also did it in 2021, joining Gretzky and Mario Lemieux to have multiple calendar years with at least 100 assists.
