Edvinsson, Red Wings recover to defeat Penguins in OT

PITTSBURGH -- Simon Edvinsson scored 1:30 into overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 at PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday.

Edvinsson scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the slot 31 seconds after Evgeni Malkin nearly won it for Pittsburgh on a breakaway, when Cam Talbot stretched to deny his backhand.

“That felt really good,” Edvinsson said. “First OT (goal). We battled all game. To get that goal at the end and two points, it’s huge.”

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, and Talbot made 31 saves for the Red Wings (7-7-1), who had been outscored by a combined 7-1 in losing their past two.

Bryan Rust and Anthony Beauvillier scored for the Penguins (6-9-3), who lost 7-1 at home to the Dallas Stars on Monday and are 1-2-2 in their past five. Alex Nedeljkovic made 28 saves.

“We’re obviously disappointed we didn’t get the win,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “But I thought our guys played hard. I think there’s a lot of reasons for optimism. We get down 2-0 in the game, we climb back in it, we get two goals. That was the response.

“I think there’s a lot to take from that, just from the mindset of players and their determined conviction to get back in the game. So, for me, I thought that was a great response.”

Jonatan Berggren put Detroit ahead 1-0 at 1:00 of the second period. Taking a cross-ice pass from Vladimir Tarasenko, he sent a wrist shot from the left face-off circle past a sliding Marcus Pettersson for his first goal this season.

“That was a really good feeling,” Berggren said. “Of course, we created a lot of chances, so it kind of feels like a curse there sometimes. But yeah, lucky to get the first one. ... I’ve lost count of how many times I could score. That’s hockey sometimes.”

Kane made it 2-0 on the power play at 5:15, dropping to one knee for a one-timer from low in the right circle to end a seven-game goal drought with his third of the season.

Rust cut it to 2-1 at 7:19 by carrying the puck down the left wall and around Moritz Seider before tucking a shot around Talbot’s left pad.

“Obviously, a loss is a loss,” Rust said, “but I think the way we responded -- we went down two -- was a lot better than the way we responded the other night. Obviously, Rome wasn’t built in a day. We’re trying to get this thing going in the right direction as fast as we can. That was a good step.”

Beauvillier then tied it 2-2 at 12:23 with a wrist shot from a sharp angle after Pettersson held off Christian Fischer to send a pass across the edge of the crease.

“It's a good game for us,” Malkin said. “It’s an even game, and overtime, we lost. It’s a better game than last game, you know? Like, a couple mistakes. First goal is my mistake. I'm not way deeper. But all four lines played better tonight, for sure. It’s a great night for our team, I think.

“It was a small step [toward] a better game for tonight. I mean, it's hard to explain. But again, I hope, next game, we play the same and we have a better chance to win. Little bit better and some luck, we win next game, for sure.”

Malkin and fellow Penguins center Sidney Crosby (assist) each had six shots on goal.

“There’s nights that you play Pittsburgh and they’re Pittsburgh. There’s nights that you play Pittsburgh and Sidney and Malkin look like they’re going to take the game over,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “This was one of those nights. So I give our guys credit. It’s tough to check those guys. Everyone in the lineup has to do it on the road and we did it.”

NOTES: Talbot reached 250 NHL wins, becoming the eighth undrafted goalie since 1963-64 to hit the milestone. ... Edvinsson is the third Red Wings defenseman to score an overtime goal at age 21 or younger, joining Seider (Nov. 6, 2021 and Dec. 4, 2021) and Dennis Cholowski (Nov. 12, 2019). ... Penguins forward Blake Lizotte left at 16:24 of the first period after taking a puck to the face from teammate Drew O'Connor. Lizotte was down in the Red Wings crease before going to the locker room while holding a tissue to his face. No update was provided. ... Pittsburgh goalie Tristan Jarry backed up Nedeljkovic and was active for the first time since being recalled Saturday from a conditioning loan with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
