Red Wings score 3 in 3rd to rally past Islanders

ELMONT, N.Y. – Lucas Raymond broke a tie with 6:07 remaining, and the Detroit Red Wings scored three straight goals in the third period to rally for a 4-2 win against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Monday.

Raymond gave Detroit a 3-2 lead at 13:53 of the third by deflecting Simon Edvinsson's point shot over Semyon Varlamov’s blocker.

“We were desperate coming in here today,” Detroit goalie Alex Lyon said. “I just got to give a lot of credit to the guys. Obviously, we could have folded the tents there and we fought until the bitter end and scored two big ones there at the end. So, it feels good. It’s going to be nice to have a happy plane ride, but we can’t be satisfied. We have to continue to push and be ready for Wednesday (against the Calgary Flames).”

Edvinsson and Moritz Seider each had a goal and an assist, and Dylan Larkin also scored for the Red Wings (9-10-2), who have won two of their past three games. Lyon made 27 saves.

“The message to the guys after was just to keep working at rounding out our game and getting our game in order,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Because, this group has shown some battle and some fight. I thought through 40 minutes, we did some pretty good things. We had three legit backdoor open nets that could have made a huge difference.

“Quite fortunately, we get a defensive-zone coverage goal against, which we haven’t done as of late and go down. Obviously, the power play had some issues at the end of the second period, but we had a stretch there, six or seven minutes, [where we played] our best hockey.”

Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri scored for the Islanders (8-9-5), who have lost six of eight (2-3-3). Varlamov made 17 saves.

“Sometimes in life, you have to be resilient,” New York coach Patrick Roy said. “Because if I hadn’t been resilient, I wouldn't be in front of you today. We could feel sorry for ourselves or roll our sleeves up and get ready for the next game. And that's the approach we need to have. We need to believe in what we're doing and what we're doing is the right thing.”

Lee gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 4:35 of the first period after he beat a stickless Lyon blocker side from just inside the left face-off dot. After Jean-Gabriel Pageau missed a chance in front, he picked up the puck behind the goal line and found Lee for the one-time finish.

Seider tied it 1-1 at 13:25 after he beat Varlamov high blocker side through a screen. From behind the net, Andrew Copp fed Seider for a one-timer from just inside the right circle to end a 16-game scoring drought.

Palmieri put New York back ahead 2-1 at 7:42 of the second period. Lyon stopped a Brock Nelson deflection off Isaiah George’s point shot, but Palmieri scored on the rebound.

George, 20, recorded his first career point in his 10th NHL game.

Larkin tied it 2-2 at 11:20 of the third. Justin Holl’s shot from the right boards landed on Larkin’s stick in front, and he beat Varlamov around his right pad from atop the crease

“Our mistakes are costing us goals,” Islanders captain Anders Lee said. “I don't think it's one [thing]. It's the way that the game's going right now. We're not getting away with anything.”

Edvinsson scored an empty-net goal with three seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.

“I think we were ready from the start,” Johansson said. “We were going out there and we were heavy on our fore-check. And from there, we won a lot of puck battles… And I think when our fore-check was good, we spent a lot of time in their zone. And then, of course, Alex [Lyon] was great back there, and the penalty kill was great. And overall, a good desperation down there to win the game.”

NOTES: Red Wings forward Patrick Kane did not play because of an upper-body injury. … Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov missed the game due to illness. … Islanders forward Anthony Duclair, who has missed the past 17 games due to a lower-body injury, and defenseman Adam Pelech, who has missed the past 11 games with an upper-body injury, is each skating on his own. … Noah Dobson recorded his 200th NHL point (41 goals, 159 assists) in his 339th career game. … Detroit defenseman Albert Johansson, 23, had an assist for his first career point in his 11th NHL game.
