2024-25 Training Camp Day 1: Duclair

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF DUCLAIR

Anthony Duclair has officially arrived.

The 6'0," 200 lbs. forward hit the ice this morning for Day One of his first training camp on Long Island, practicing on a line with Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat. Thursday was Duclair's first official practice with Barzal and Horvat, but they hit the ice prior to camp to scrimmage and skate together.

"We came here two weeks before camp, trying to find any type of chemistry,"Duclair said. "Anytime we get on the ice together, I talk to [them] and we're gonna keep communicating in camp and just try to get better."

Head Coach Patrick Roy didn't take it easy on anyone on Day One of camp, but the Isles view a hard practice as a positive one.

"As far as training camp goes, it's definitely a tough one," Duclair said. "At the same time, you enjoy the grind, because it definitely helps you [get ready] for the start of the season, you always want to get off to a good start. It's a long season, you want to get in shape for it."

2024-25 Training Camp Day 1: Martin

MATT MARTIN ON HIS PTO:

Matt Martin was in both a familiar and unfamiliar place as New York Islanders Training Camp opened.

His stall in the Islandersā€™ locker room, where heā€™s sat for 13 years, was very familiar. Attending camp on a Professional Tryout, less so, but the physical winger has his mind set on doing everything he can to make the team.

ā€œItā€™s a little different, obviously,ā€ Martin said. ā€œIā€™ve got a lot of familiarity with the group, so itā€™s good to be back in the locker room and having fun again. Itā€™s a little bit different, but nothing out of the ordinary in terms of how I want to prove myself.ā€

The 35-year-old said he wasnā€™t surprised about his tryout status and acknowledged that his age and injuries last season were the likely factors. Martin played 57 games last season and missed the Islanders final two playoff games with a lower-body injury. He said heā€™s healthy entering this yearā€™s camp.

ā€œObviously, last season didn't end the way anyone wanted it to, but especially for myself, being injured and not being able to play,ā€ Martin said. Just showing up healthy was exciting and to get the first day out of the way because you can't match that kind of intensity. [My] body held up good, I feel good and [Iā€™m] excited for tomorrow.ā€

Martin is taking a day-by-day approach to camp and knows heā€™ll have to earn whatever comes his way.

ā€œAs a competitor you believe you can make any team,ā€ Martin said. ā€œMindset wise, you just want to go out there and give it your all every day and the chips will fall where they fall but I'm excited to be back and excited to get to work.ā€
