Defeat in Overtime

The Avalanche lost to the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in overtime at Prudential Center on Sunday. Valeri Nichushkin, Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson each scored for Colorado while Trent Miner made 20 saves in his first start of the season.

"We made some mistakes but we played hard," Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar said. "I think we had a solid effort again, especially on the short turnaround. We dig back out of a 2-0 hole and we had some chances to win the game. I thought our guys gave us everything they had today."

How It Happened

New Jersey's Arseny Gritsyuk opened the scoring with a left-circle shot at 9:09 of the first period.

Jack Hughes gave the Devils a 2-0 lead with a left-circle wrist shot at 9:48 of the opening frame.

At 12:55 of the first, Nichushkin put the Avs on the board with his fifth goal of the season via a shot from the right slot.

MacKinnon tied the game at 17:03 of the first period with his seventh goal of the season when he cleaned up a loose puck in the blue paint. Artturi Lehkonen recorded the primary assist on the goal, picking up a point in his 600th NHL game.

Connor Brown gave the Devils a 3-2 with a breakaway goal at 12:49 of the second period.

The Avs tied the game at 13:55 of the third period when Nelson scored his second goal of the season via a one-timer from the doorstep set up by Ross Colton's feed.

"I went to Colton because he seemed to have lot of energy and seemed to be making things happen," Bednar said about moving Colton on a line with Nelson and Nichushkin. "And he got a little bump out of his game and the line. And they scored a big goal for us."

Hughes scored the game-winning goal for New Jersey at 1:53 of overtime.
