Merk' putting in the work
San Jose Barracuda defenseman Ryan Merkley is tied for the team lead in points through two games after collecting a pair of assists on the first and second goal of San Jose's 3-1 win at Iowa on Oct. 15. Merkley also paces the team with a plus-3 rating and co-leads all team defensemen with three shots on goal.
Et Tu, Makiniemi?
Newcomer Eetu Makiniemi saved 28-of-29 shots and earned the win in his Barracuda debut on Oct. 15. The netminder has earned a .950 save percentage or above in 33% of his career AHL starts. Makiniemi and Aaron Dell split times last weekend as the Barracuda moved to 2-0 on the weekend.
Bam bam, points for Cam
Cam Lund scored his first goal in his first collegiate game on Oct. 1. The forward also tallied the lone assist on the game-winning overtime goal to lift Northeastern to a 3-2 victory against Long Island University the next night. Lund is tied for third on the team in points.
Swedish style
Filip Bystedt played for Sweden at the U20 Four Nations tournament in Finland and led the tournament in points with seven (3g, 4a). He continued his red-hot pace into the SHL season with four points (2g, 2a) in his first four games and the center ranks tied-second in SHL points among under-20 players in 2022-23.
