Canucks at Senators | Recap

OTTAWA -- Jake DeBrusk had two goals and an assist, and the Vancouver Canucks handed the Ottawa Senators their fifth straight loss, 4-3 at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

Kiefer Sherwood had a goal and an assist, Elias Pettersson had two assists, and Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves for the Canucks (10-6-3), who had lost two in a row. Max Sasson had an assist in his NHL debut.

“I thought it was a good statement win,” Sherwood said. “Probably a couple things we’ve got to clean up and not give them a chance at the end, but we found a way and we have a lot to build on.”

Tim Stutzle scored his 100th NHL goal, Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist, Drake Batherson had two assists, and Linus Ullmark made 17 saves for the Senators (8-11-1), who are 0-4-1 during their losing streak.

“I know we've been stressing playing a good full 60, and I just think we're still having too many lapses,” Ottawa forward Josh Norris said. “And I know you guys have heard it a million times. Trust me, so have we. So, it's frustrating, and now we're trying to work it out.”

Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes received a game misconduct and five-minute major for boarding Norris at 12:29. The Canucks killed off the entire five-minute power play.

“That’s a lot to throw at the team, and I thought we handled it well,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “Proud of the guys. They hung in there and grinded out the win.”

VAN@OTT: DeBrusk puts Canucks on top with PPG in opening period

DeBrusk tipped in a Conor Garland wrist shot on the power play to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 18:36 of the first period. It was his first goal in seven games.

“I think it’s more so my game kind of building,” DeBrusk said. “I knew I was going to break through. And it was a great play; the first one was an easy tip. The second one was all ‘Woody,’ and the third one was all ‘Woody’ as well.”

The Senators are 1-10-1 when allowing the first goal this season.

“We’ve got to play better. I thought we gifted goals, quite honestly, gifted goals,” Ottawa coach Travis Green said. “And give Vancouver some credit. They checked well, they’re a good checking team and got some good habits in their game. But in the NHL, you can't gift goals.”

Brady Tkachuk tied it 1-1 at 3:41 of the second period with a power-play goal. He tipped a Jake Sanderson point shot, gathered the rebound and tucked it in around Lankinen’s right pad.

Teddy Blueger responded to make it 2-1 at 9:23. He took a centering pass from Sasson and beat Ullmark low glove with a wrist shot from the slot.

“I really liked his game,” Tocchet said of Sasson. “I mean, to just get called up out of the blue, he seized the moment. Nice to see him go out there and contribute for us tonight.”

VAN@OTT: Blueger scores goal against Linus Ullmark

DeBrusk took a cross-ice pass from Sherwood and finished a deke on the backhand around Ullmark’s outstretched left pad on the rush to make it 3-1 at 13:01.

“With Quinn being out and guys that we’re missing and stuff like that, I thought we came together as a group,” DeBrusk said. “I thought we had a pretty solid 40-minute stretch after that [five-minute] power play they had. I thought we started to play our game and we got some bounces because of it.”

Sherwood pushed it to 4-1 at 8:41 of the third period when he pounced on a loose puck in the crease.

“I thought we played a solid team game tonight,” Vancouver defenseman Tyler Myers said. “I mean, a couple of chances they had throughout the first 50 minutes, even 40 minutes, and ‘Lanks’ made some good saves to keep the score where it was. But we played hard. We supported each other, got open for each other and it made it that much easier.”

Giroux chipped the puck over Lankinen’s glove in tight on the power play with the Senators' net empty to cut it to 4-2 at 16:29.

Stutzle one-timed a cross-slot pass from Giroux with the net empty to cut it to 4-3 with 44 seconds remaining.

“I think we're going to turn this around,” Giroux said. “I strongly believe that. And you know, it's got to be everybody. It just can't be a few guys having good games. We need everybody to be dialed in. The guys are working hard, but we’ve got to play a little smarter, and it's going to turn around.”
