Tavares put the Maple Leafs ahead 2-1 at 12:04 during a 4-on-3 power play, sweeping in Matthews’ rebound from the right post.
“He’s been so good for us all year, but especially as of late since the 4 Nations (Face-Off), just a little extra pop in his step,” Matthews said of Tavares. “He’s another big-time player, so tonight was another big effort, another big game from him.”
Toronto was 1-for-4 on the power play; Los Angeles was 0-for-3.
“They got skill everywhere, so you don’t want to give them those looks,” Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson said. “We, for the most part, did a pretty good job, but they found a way to score and, ultimately that’s the difference.”
Tavares scored an empty-net goal at 18:35 for the 3-1 final.
He was most pleased with how the Maple Leafs defended throughout the game.
“I just liked the way we clogged the middle of the ice, and I thought we defended real well,” Tavares said. “Tonight, I think it certainly was evident, but I think it’s really been there over the last number of games, just the effort to block shots and be in lanes and get sticks on things and desperation.”
