The Erie Otters will likely never see a player quite like Connor McDavid again and, on Friday, they made sure no one will ever wear his jersey number again.

The Otters hosted McDavid and his family for a special pregame ceremony to raise the familiar No. 97 of the Edmonton Oilers captain to the rafters at Erie Insurance Arena on Friday.

The Otters, who compete in the Ontario Hockey League, rolled out the red carpet for the three-time Hart Trophy winner. The team's entire roster wore No. 97 McDavid jerseys for warmups while the man himself read the team's starting lineup in the locker room after a quick pep talk.

During his time with the Otters, McDavid averaged an absurd 2.55 points per game, the most in the team's history. In just 47 games, McDavid scored 120 points (44 goals, 76 assists). The team shared a highlight video from a then-15-year-old McDavid tearing it up out on the ice.

McDavid couldn't help but have the memories come rushing back to his pre-NHL days.

"It's been really fun," McDavid said to reporters. "It means a lot, obviously, to be recognized for my time here and the great teams that were here."
