Ovechkin Islanders Sorokin

As congratulations poured in from around the NHL for Alex Ovechkin's record-breaking 895th NHL goal, the Washington Capitals' opponent in the game made a case for understatement of the year.

The New York Islanders posted perhaps the funniest reaction to the goal on social media:

The team was of course having a little fun with fans as moments later it posted an official congratulations to Ovechkin for becoming the NHL's new record-holder for career goals.

Islanders players met up with Ovechkin at center ice as the game was stopped for a special ceremony. Ovechkin shared a nice moment with his countryman, Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin, as well.

Teams around the League followed suit. The Toronto Maple Leafs had captain Auston Matthews, who knows a little bit about scoring goals himself, speak on their behalf.

The New Jersey Devils had current exec and former goalie Martin Brodeur send congrats. He even snuck a joke in about hating to play against Ovechkin for "shooting the puck too hard."

For the Hurricanes, it was a familiar face for Ovechkin -- defenseman Dmitry Orlov, a member of the 2018 Stanley Cup champion Capitals -- doing the talking.

Patrick Kane, who has 491 career goals, did the honors for the Detroit Red Wings.

And the congratulations wouldn't be complete without Penguins captain Sidney Crosby chiming in.

The congrats kept pouring in from around the League in celebration of the newly minted greatest goal-scorer in NHL history.
