Olczyk surprises son

Hockey Fights Cancer month is special for the Olczyk family.

Eddie Olczyk surprised his son, Nick, during the Utah Mammoth broadcast on the team’s Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Delta Center on Saturday.

Nick, who is a TV analyst for the Mammoth, was speaking about his dad’s battle with colon cancer when the former NHL forward walked onto the broadcast.

The Mammoth analyst teared up as he hugged his dad.

Eddie, who also works as an analyst for TNT, then showed the cameras his “I Fight For” card which featured 26 names.

“I have my card here too for Hockey Fights Cancer and, sadly, I have 26 names on here. And when it becomes hockey beats cancer, we can celebrate,” the retired forward said. “We want to continue to fight for the people that are not here and for people that are in the battle and will be in the battle and also for the people that have survived.”

In 2017, Eddie was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. After receiving surgery and chemotherapy treatment, he was declared cancer-free in 2018.

Earlier in the month, the TNT analyst had a special message for those battling cancer during the NHL on TNT broadcast before calling a game at Ball Arena in Denver.
