WSH@NYI: Ovechkin passes Gretzky for most goals in NHL history

The goal heard 'round the world was followed by the celly loved 'round social media.

Alex Ovechkin punctuated his 895th NHL goal with a headfirst slide across the ice at UBS Arena. It wasn't planned, or at least didn't appear to be. It was just a reaction full of pure joy.

Social media ate up the celebration, with good reason because the photos are incredible.

More than a few people pointed out that Ovechkin's celebration was similar to that of his infamous dive, along with teammates, into the Georgetown Waterfront during the team's wild Stanley Cup title summer-long celebration following a Washington Nationals game. ESPN's Arda Ocal called it the "most fitting celly."

Olympic champion swimmer Katie Ledecky, born in Washington D.C. and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, (who also happens to be the niece of New York Islanders owner John Ledecky) had the same exact note for Ovechkin's celebration Sunday as she did back in 2018.

TNT hockey analyst Paul Bissonnette called it "perfect."

We can all only wonder what No. 896 will bring out.
