Ovi with dog

When Ovi met Ovi.

Last week, Alex Ovechkin met an America’s VetDogs puppy that was named after him in honor of the Washington Capitals captain becoming the NHL’s all-time leading scorer last season.

In a video posted by the team on Instagram, Ovechkin brought a plush toy of himself for his new buddy. He also gifted the pup his Capitals jersey, which the dog “Ovi” posed for pictures in all over the team’s practice rink.

Both Ovis even shared a nuzzle.

The 18-week-old black Labrador will be raised by a volunteer in Virginia for the next 14-18 months, learning basic obedience and training skills. After his training is complete, he will return to America’s VetDogs headquarters in New York and be trained by a certified service dog instructor to learn skills such as nightmare interruptions and opening handicap doors to help a disabled U.S. veteran or first responder.

The Capitals have worked with America’s VetDogs since 2019.
