Ovi birthday

For most people, 40 is the new 30. For Alex Ovechkin, 40 is the new 895.

The Washington Capitals captain celebrated his 40th birthday Wednesday, in the most forty-tastic way possible.

His wife, Nastya, posted a photo of Ovechkin on her social media with their two sons, Sergei and Ilya, posing with birthday balloons to celebrate his special day.

Entering his 21st NHL season, Ovechkin is coming off a historic year that saw him score his 895th career goal, passing Wayne Gretzky to become the League’s all-time leading goal-scorer. He was tied for third in the League in goals last season (44), in just 65 games played.

According to Capitals PR, Ovechkin scored an NHL-record 422 goals in his 30s, which accounts for 47 percent of his career goals.

Earlier this week, to round out Ovechkin's 30s, the Capitals announced a special Ovechkin-themed cereal in a partnership with D.C. area grocery chain Giant Food, starting Sept. 19.

At this rate, who knows what’s in store for Ovechkin’s next decade.
