Germany unveiled its roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 on Wednesday, headlined by Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider.
Germany is looking to win a gold medal in ice hockey for the first time in the Winter Olympics. It won silver in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, but NHL players did not participate.
Seider said he is looking forward to playing alongside Draisaitl.
I mean, I don't think there's much to say about Leon, to be honest," Seider said. "I think he's a top-five player for many years now and I was fortunate enough to play with him on the national team jersey already. Everyone should be very excited, but we have plenty of talent and it shouldn't be only on his shoulders. So I think that's the message we've got to get abroad, that we have good players and it's not only him to kind of take away the pressure, but he will be a game changer for us for sure."
This is the first group of NHL players to represent Germany at the Olympics since 2014, when NHL players most recently participated.
“It's obviously really exciting," Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle said. "Any time you have a chance to represent your country, especially at the Olympics, it's a huge honor. I think for every athlete, probably the biggest tournament there is. And yeah, I was really happy to see the roster announced. Some of my best friends are on there, so it's going to be a lot of fun. And I can't wait.”
The tournament will feature all 12 teams playing three preliminary games in their respective groups.
“First of all, super pumped," Utah Mammoth forward JJ Peterka said. "Super excited for it. Coach and GM called me. Just a super good feeling. Can't wait to get there. Can't wait to play with all the guys from Germany with Draisaitl for the first time. So it's going to be pretty exciting.
"I think for all of us, it's going to be a great challenge playing against so many good names there. And I think just developing as a team as the tournament goes on and playing a good, solid hockey game all together.
The three group winners and the best second-place team will get a bye into the quarterfinals; the other eight teams will play single-elimination games to determine the other four quarterfinalists. The gold medal game will be held on Feb. 22.
