Draisaitl, Oilers rally past Flyers in OT for 1st win of season

EDMONTON -- Leon Draisaitl scored 56 seconds into overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers their first win of the season, 4-3 against the Philadelphia Flyers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

Samuel Ersson stopped Connor McDavid on a breakaway with his left pad, but McDavid picked up the rebound and passed back out to Draisaitl, who was left all alone in front.

"It was a nice backcheck by [McDavid] and a nice save by Stuart (Skinner). It was a nice pass by Connor and I was fortunate to put that in," Draisaitl said. "We are obviously scratching for some points here early on.

"Any point we can get is big, and it was nice to come back and win the game."

Evan Bouchard, Connor Brown and Adam Henrique also scored for the Oilers (1-3-0), who ended a four-game home stand to open the season. Skinner made 27 saves.

"Our best players really came up clutch," Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. "The game-tying goal, Leon makes a play on the wall, McDavid makes a pass and Bouchard scores. And obviously those guys were on the ice again for the game-winning goal.

"We need those guys to make key plays in key moments, and they definitely did tonight.”

Matvei Michkov scored his first two NHL goals, and Morgan Frost had two assists for the Flyers (1-1-1), who will conclude a season-opening four-game road trip at the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. Ersson made 29 saves.

"We had a ton of chances, too, but we just couldn’t put it in," Frost said. "Unfortunately, we don’t get the two points, but I thought we played a great game. So, I think we can keep our heads held high."

Michkov gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 4:46 of the first period, stuffing in the puck at the right post for a power-play goal.

Michkov then made it 2-0 with another power-play goal at 9:21. This time he buried a one-timer from a sharp angle at the bottom of the right circle.

"He’s a dynamic player, not just his passing, but how he can hold on to a puck and get out of traffic," Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. "I think it goes a long way with his teammates. He’s out here blocking shots also and doing all the other stuff that creates that team camaraderie, that team concept. That’s really important."

Bouchard appeared to cut the lead at 16:20 of the first, but the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference on Zach Hyman.

However, Henrique did cut it to 2-1 at 6:26 of the second period. He skated into the rebound of Mattias Janmark's sharp-angled shot and lifted a backhand over Ersson's glove.

"It was just playing hard, trying to play with pace and play our game," Henrique said. "At times we maybe got away from it a little bit, but I thought we did a good job responding at times.

"The second period was high tempo and high pace with penalty trouble, but overall I thought it was a pretty good period."

Brown tied it 2-2 at 14:01 of the second, scoring with a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle off a pass from Jeff Skinner.

"We’re confident in the character of our group, we’re confident in the abilities here," Brown said. "We just needed to get the ball rolling in the right direction, so gritting one out like that is a huge step."

Bobby Brink put the Flyers back in front 3-2 at 19:37 when his centering pass deflected in off Mattias Ekholm.

Bouchard tied it 3-3 at 16:18 of the third period, burying a one-timer from the left circle off a pass from McDavid.

"We played a pretty solid game. Sometimes, given their third goal there, you have to tip your cap. Their guys were in good position and they managed to put one past us," Flyers forward Travis Konecny said. "I think there are things in the whole game that we can clean up, but overall, the power play looked good."

NOTES: Philadelphia was 2-for-7 on the power play. Edmonton was 0-for-4 ... McDavid extended his point streak to three games (four assists) ... Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim played in his 500th NHL game.
