Shane Pinto had three goals and an assist for the Ottawa Senators in a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on Saturday.

Michael Amadio had a goal and an assist, and Linus Ullmark made 23 saves for Ottawa (5-1-1).

Christian Dvorak and Arber Xhekaj scored for Montreal (2-4-0). Sam Montembeault allowed four goals on 19 shots.

Pinto gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the first period, then made it 2-0 at 5:57.

Dvorak cut it to 2-1 at 18:45 when he put in a rebound in front.

Amadio made it 3-1 just 22 seconds into the second with a redirection.

Pinto scored short-handed on a breakaway to make it 4-1 at 4:46.

Xhekaj cut it to 4-2 at 8:44 of the third with a slap shot from the right point.

It was the preseason finale for both teams. The Senators host Florida to open the season next Thursday, Oct. 10. The Canadiens open at home against Toronto next Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2: John Tavares scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena in the preseason finale for both teams.

Tavares scored on a wrist shot from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Auston Matthews to break a 2-2 tie at 4:58 of the third period.

Matthews had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs (4-1-1), and Mitch Marner had two assists. Joseph Woll made 18 saves.

Andrew Copp had a goal and an assist for Detroit (3-3-2), and Ville Husso made 30 saves.

Christian Fischer gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead a 3:33 of the first period, tipping in a pass from Copp from the slot.

Steven Lorentz tied the game at 12:20 from in front of the crease, converting Ryan Reaves' pass from behind the net.

Copp swept in a shot from the left circle off a rebound on the power play for a 2-1 Detroit lead at 17:58.

Matthew's power-play goal, a one-time from the right circle, tied the game again at 2:52 of the second period.

The Maple Leafs open the season at Montreal on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and the Red Wings will host Pittsburgh on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Utah 2, Avalanche 1: Dylan Guenther had a goal and an assist for the Utah Hockey Club in their win against the Colorado Avalanche at Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah.

Nick Schmaltz also scored, and Connor Ingram made 20 saves for Utah (5-2-0).

Ivan Ivan scored, and Alexandar Georgiev made 21 saves for Colorado (1-5-0).

Guenther gave Utah a 1-0 lead at 2:31 of the first period with a wrist shot from the right point.

Ivan tied it 1-1 at 5:52 with a one-timer off a rebound at the bottom of the left circle.

Schmaltz put Utah ahead 2-1 with a power-play goal at 17:46 of the third.

Utah will play the first regular-season game in franchise history at home against Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Avalanche open the season at Vegas on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Panthers 4, Kings 2: Jonah Gadjovich scored twice, and Aaron Ekblad had three assists to help the Florida Panthers defeat the Los Angeles Kings at Centre Videotron in Quebec City.

It was the preseason finale for both teams.

Aleksander Barkov and Anton Lundell scored, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves for the Panthers (5-3-0).

Trevor Moore had a goal and an assist, and Phillip Danault scored for the Kings (4-1-1). Darcy Kuemper allowed three goals on 14 shots.

Danault put Los Angeles in front 1-0 at 6:03 of the first period with a redirection in the slot.

Barkov tied it 1-1 on the power play at 9:07, scoring with a backhand move around Kuemper.

Lundell gave Florida a 2-1 lead at 16:03 with a power-play goal. He scored at the right side of the net by batting in the rebound of an Ekblad shot that caromed off the end boards.

Gadjovich pushed the lead to 3-1 at 19:15 of the second period, but Moore cut it to 3-2 at 7:44 of the third period off a no-look pass through the crease by Quinton Byfield. Byfield carried the puck through the Panthers defense and evaded Bobrovsky, who came out of his net for an attempted poke check.

Gadjovich scored into an empty net at 19:36 for the 4-2 final.

Florida, the defending Stanley Cup champion, is scheduled to open its regular season at home against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Los Angeles’ first game is at the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

Capitals 2, Bruins 0: Charlie Lindgren made 17 saves, and the Washington Capitals defeated the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena in Washington in the preseason finale for both teams.

Aliaksei Protas and Trevor van Riemsdyk scored for the Capitals (3-3-0).

Brandon Bussi made 30 saves for the Bruins (2-4-1).

Protas’ short-handed goal put Washington up 1-0 at 9:00 of the first period. He won a face-off in left circle, and the puck deflected off the linesman’s skate into the low slot, where Protas lifted a shot over Bussi’s glove.

Lindgren made a stop on Brett Harrison from point-blank range at 3:31 of the third period to keep it a one-goal game.

Van Riemsdyk extended the lead to 2-0 at 14:22 when he put a high backhand over Bussi’s right shoulder from below the left circle.

Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play.

Boston will open its season at the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. Washington’s first game is at home against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 12.

Bruins at Capitals | 10/05/24 | Recap

Hurricanes 5, Predators 3: Eric Robinson scored the go-ahead goal with 2:29 left in the third period for the Carolina Hurricanes in their win against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

He tapped in a cross-crease pass from Felix Unger Sorum at the left post, then added an empty-net goal at 19:00 for the 5-3 final.

Josiah Slavin, Bradly Nadeau and Sam Gagner also scored for Carolina (4-1-1). Frederik Andersen allowed two goals on 31 shots through two periods before he was replaced by Spencer Martin, who allowed one goal on 12 shots.

Tommy Novak had a goal and two assists, and Mark Jankowski and Cole Smith also scored for Nashville (2-3). Juuse Saros stopped all 12 shots he faced in the first period before he was replaced by Scott Wedgewood, who allowed four goals on 16 shots.

Jankowski gave Nashville a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 15:17 of the first period, putting away a touch pass from Philip Tomasino at the top of the crease.

Slavin tied it 1-1 at 4:20 of the second with a snap shot from the slot.

Nadeau put Carolina ahead 2-1 at 7:01 with a one-timer from the left circle.

Smith tied it 2-2 at 10:10 when he finished off a rebound in front.

Gagner put Carolina back ahead 3-2 at 18:43 with a backhand in front.

Novak tied it 3-3 at 9:02 of the third on a breakaway.

It was the preseason finale for Carolina, which opens the regular season at home against Tampa Bay on Friday, Oct. 11.
