DAL at NJD | Recap

NEWARK, N.J. -- Jake Oettinger made 30 saves, and the Dallas Stars extended their road point streak to 12 games with a 3-0 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Wednesday.

Oettinger earned his second shutout of the season and the 14th of his career. It was also his first win against the Devils in four tries (1-2-1). New Jersey was the only current NHL team, other than Dallas, that Oettinger hadn't defeated.

"My goalie coach from the summer who I've had for like 15 years is Jersey's goalie coach (Dave Rogalski), so he always reminds me about never having beaten them," Oettinger said with a grin. "To beat them is nice, and then to have a shutout against them is even better."

Miro Heiskanen had a goal and an assist, and Jamie Benn and Esa Lindell each had two assists for the Stars (18-5-5), who are 8-0-4 in their past 12 away from home, the longest road point streak in their history.

Dallas played its first game this season without forward Tyler Seguin, who is likely out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ACL injury at 1:44 of the first period of a 3-2 overtime loss at the New York Rangers on Tuesday.

"It's crazy how many injuries we've had this year and a lot of guys stepping up, especially the defense corps," said Benn, the Stars captain. "There's lots of mixing and matching, different lines, different positions, and it's just about going out there and getting the job done.

"I'm pretty lucky. I get to play with 20 great players in here."

DAL@NJD: Oettinger records 30-save shutout against Devils

Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves for the Devils (16-10-1), who have lost three straight, all at home, and six of their past nine overall.

"If I'm another team looking at the Devils, with the speed and skill we have, I'm not giving them anything and leaning on the side of defense," New Jersey defenseman Brenden Dillon said. "It's a veteran team over there that defends well, has good sticks, and don't give you anything for free. That was kind of what we got tonight."

Oettinger made eight saves in the first period. His best sequence came when he stopped Juho Lammikko’s backhand from the slot at 18:29 and then Luke Glendening on the rebound at the right post one second later.

"I think I did (get that rebound)," Oettinger said. "[Glendening] was mad at me for that, so that's always fun when you can stop your friends like that.

"It's not just the goalie. It's the amount of blocked shots that we had, the way the penalty kill has been playing."

Dallas had 24 blocked shots and went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. It is 19-for-19 on the penalty kill in the past six games.

"When you go up 3-0 but your guys still play hard for you because they know how much [a shutout] means to you, it means a lot to you as a goalie," Oettinger said. "I'm just thankful to play behind a great group of guys."

Heiskanen scored his first goal in 15 games to give Dallas a 1-0 lead at 11:34 of the second period. After taking Roope Hintz’s pass from below the left face-off circle, Heiskanen scored on a snap shot from the middle of the right circle.

Jason Robertson made it 2-0 at 17:36, scoring on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle.

"In our game against the Rangers, we gave up a lot, and we wanted to regroup," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "This is a great veteran group we’ve got here. It's hard to win on the road, especially with how much we gave up (Tuesday). I thought they did a great job of tightening everything up and not giving up too much."

Oettinger denied Dawson Mercer from in close at 18:50 after the forward got through the defense with the Devils short-handed.

Mikko Rantanen then pushed it to 3-0 from the slot at 7:05 of the third period. He redirected Lindell’s waist-high point shot between the legs of Markstrom and then reached behind the goalie to poke the puck in.

"You have to find a way to take control of the game and get one," New Jersey coach Sheldon Keefe said. "I didn't mind our second period, until they scored, and I didn't like how we were after that. We were essentially lifeless. We made a couple of mistakes in the second period and their best players made us pay for them."
