It happened with 2:09 to play in Wednesday's game against the Golden Knights. Jordan Eberle carried the puck in the zone and eventually got net-front to knock in a rebound to get the Kraken on the board.

But before you could watch the highlights, a call came from the Vegas bench. They were challenging the goal as being offside.
Unfortunately, the Golden Knights' bench bosses were correct and Eberle's score was no more.

To some Kraken faithful, it felt like "here we go again!" Sometimes, it feels like these things happen A. Lot. But are the Kraken involved in a lot of challenges and how often do they (or do they not!) go their way?
Let's dig in.
Bundled by GEICO
, we used play-by-play data from Evolving-Hockey.com to pull every challenge that has happened in the 2021-22 NHL season. There have been 154 total challenges for either offside or goaltender interference. 139 were initiated by a team, 15 were initiated by the league. Of those 154 challenges, 101 have resulted in a goal being overturned - so 66-percent of the time this season, a goal was taken off the board when a challenge was involved.
How do the Kraken stack up against those odds? Here are all 32 NHL teams sorted by percentage of goals lost (as compared to challenges faced) and then by number of goals lost.

Goals Lost to Challenge

Seattle is one of two teams - along with Columbus - that not only has lost every challenge levied against them, they also lead the league in goals lost to challenge with nine.
That feels harrowing, but again for context, they are also one of nine teams to lose every challenge faced and one of 16 teams above the league average loss rate (66%).
If you're curious, four of Seattle's challenges against were for goaltender interference and five were for offside, (all but one of Columbus' were for offside).
Now, the other side of the coin. What teams challenge the most and how successful are they in doing so?

Challenge Record

Washington, Ottawa and Edmonton challenge goals the most (7). Just four teams are perfect in their challenging of plays this season: Vegas, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers and Florida. Only Columbus has yet to win one with every other club getting at least one goal against taken away.
Seattle falls right in the middle of the pack at 50 percent, but with a low volume of challenges, so that number isn't too predictive of the team's rate of "success."
Challenges have been more frequent against Seattle this season, but every team is dealing with them to some degree. Rules are rules, as Eberle said again Thursday, and challenges are going to make sure they are enforced.
