Bastian Practice Cage

After a trip to the Sunshine State, where the Devils went 2-1-0, the team was back on the ice in Newark for a practice session today!

There were some notable additions to practice today, with Nathan Bastian participating in the first half of the session which was plenty of skills work before the start of the regular session. Bastian, who head coach Sheldon Keefe said is 'not close to being available', did not participate in the second half of the practice session.

Also on the ice was Nolan Foote, Justin Dowling, Shane Bowers and Nick DeSimone. All four were recalled on Monday and were at practice.

In and Out

While those mentioned above joined the practice session, several players did not participate. Timo Meier was kept off the ice due to back spasms, while Brett Pesce took a maintenance day.

"Considered day-to-day at this point," Keefe said. "We'll see what tomorrow brings. An additional day today was going to be helpful for them. They've been playing through some stuff and the break has been really important in lots of ways. Not only to give them rest, but in some cases some guys maybe wouldn't have played in Tampa the other night if we didn't have the break coming. We'll take advantage of this time and see where they're at tomorrow."

In the meantime, with the additional players called up, Keefe and his staff will have several new options when building out their lineup for each game.

“With the group that we have been playing, our fourth line, you probably want to play them a little bit more, get a little more ice time. However, our team has played their best hockey with those guys in," Keefe said. "Our top players, playing a little bit more have played better. So, there’s that fine line between mixing it up too much and also just recognizing that sometimes you take a little step backward in one place that can help in another.

"We just like how the group is playing," he continued. "I like the identity of the fourth line and how they’ve played, they’ve given us good shifts. The team has played well, most importantly. We’ll continue to look at it, day-to-day and opponent-to-opponent type thing.”

The Devils' next opponent will be the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.

Step by Step

It has been a long journey for Nolan Foote back to health after dealing with a back injury that kept him out all of last season. With Utica this year Foote leads the Comets forwards with four goals and five assists in 12 games as he refinds his stride.

"It has been great to start the season playing," Foote said. "Just building that confidence and getting good ice time down there, you're getting your touches back because you're getting so much time. It feels great to be back healthy, full-time."

"Just going to take it day-by-day and show them that I'm ready and want to be in the lineup," Foote said. "Each practice, just doing everything I can to show them and play whatever role they want me to play. I think I'm ready."

Now up with the Devils, Foote hopes to show he's ready and belongs in the NHL, especially having worked this past summer on one of the areas he considered his biggest weakness: his skating.

“Mainly just quickness, that’s been the biggest weakness for me in my professional career," he shared. "I worked a ton on that with skating coaches in the summer and I think it’s a lot better.”

"I worked a ton on my skating this summer," he added. "I think it's improved a lot and I just have to put it in my game."

On Tuesday, Foote skated alongside Nico Hischier and Stefan Noesen with Meier not skating.

Movember

As we wind down November, Nico Hischier, Brenden Dillon and Timo Meier continue to grow out their moustaches in support of Movember. They are the New Jersey Devils official representatives of the Devils' Movember campaign. On Tuesday, Dillon and Hischier spoke about their participation in the month-long event.

“You hear about that movement, and now that I’m able to grow one myself, I want to support that," Hischier said, "Its for a great cause and I feel like giving something back to the community.”
