Story of the Day

The Capitals continue their season-long six-game road trip tonight in Calgary against the Flames, the first meeting between the teams this season. The Capitals and Flames split their season series 1-1-0 in 2024-25. Washington won the lone matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome 3-1 on Jan. 28, 2025, led by a 32-save effort from Calgary native Logan Thompson. The Capitals are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games against the Flames and have won five of their last six games (5-1-0) in Calgary.

The Capitals will look to snap their four-game losing streak tonight. Washington has lost four straight games in regulation for the first time in nearly three years (3/30/2023-4/8/2023: 0-4-0) (h/t Tom Gulitti). Eight of the Capitals’ last nine losses have been in “close games” (games decided by one goal or 2+ goals with ENG, as defined by the NHL). Twenty-two of Washington’s 27 losses this season have come in close games, which is tied for the sixth most in the NHL.

On Wednesday at Vancouver, Justin Sourdif scored his 10th goal of the season and became the eighth Capital to reach the 10-goal mark this season (also Tom Wilson: 22; Alex Ovechkin: 20; Jakob Chychrun: 18; Aliaksei Protas: 16; Dylan Strome: 13; Ethen Frank: 11; Ryan Leonard: 10). Washington’s eight skaters with 10 or more goals this season are tied for the second most among all teams (Carolina: 9; Washington: 8; Philadelphia: 8; Ottawa: 8). Sourdif and Leonard are the first pair of Capitals rookies with double-digit goal totals in the same season since Peter Bondra and Dmitri Khristich in 1990-91. The Capitals rank fourth in the NHL in points by rookies (20g-30a–50p), despite having only two rookies who have played more than two games this season. The Capitals’ 50 points by rookies in 2025-26 are more than the previous three seasons combined (2024-25: 5p; 2023-24: 35p; 2022-23: 8p).
