MONTREAL -- Joel Armia claimed gold at the IIHF World Championship on Sunday.
Finland edged Canada 4-3 in overtime to win the title on home soil in Tampere. Armia scored his fifth goal of the tournament in the victory. The veteran winger finished the event with eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) and a team-leading plus-9 differential in 10 games.
There was plenty of drama in the final moments of the third period. Armia's snipe put Canada down 3-1 with 5:56 remaining in regulation, but goals by Zach Whitecloud and Max Comtois forced the extra frame. It was Sakari Manninen who ultimately scored the championship-winner.
For his part, Josh Anderson is leaving Finland with a silver medal. The power forward collected an assist in the loss. Anderson registered eight points (1 goal, 7 assists) and a plus-2 differential in 10 games for Claude Julien's squad. Cover photo credit: HHOF-IIHF Images
